How is a dental crown procedure performed?
The dental crown can be performed by a skilled dentist who understand the fundamental anatomy of your teeth. First the mouth must be assessed with a comprehensive physical exam. This will assess whether the tooth in question is a viable tooth, needs to be extracted, or will need to have a dental crown put on it instead.
Once it is deemed worthy of a dental crown then the dentist will alert the patient and then begin performing the procedure. The procedure involves drilling so local anesthesia will be necessary throughout the dental visit. If the patient chooses they can also opt for sedation dentistry therapy which could result in a relaxed and comforting mental status while the procedure is performed. The tooth is first drilled down to make room for a proper dental crown fitting. The tooth is essentially prepared so that a dental crown can be made and fitted over the top of the tooth. The dentist uses a drill to remove the enamel necessary to fit the dental crown. After using the dental drill the dentist can take an impression of the tooth using dental casting material. After an impression is made of the tooth the dentist can now assess the anatomy of the oral cavity and fashion the perfect dental crown.
